Video Diary No. 08 “Waffles”

I take major pride in knowing that if you Google “waffles jiffy wiffy waffle house” … you get a lot of photos from me from 2009.

My friend Ed is visiting from Vancouver and was so kind to bring along… crack. No. Just waffle mix. I almost had a Kristin Bell conniption I was so happy.

Now… I have to get a waffle iron. Mission.

Am I Crazy?

Note: I wrote this mid-December. Now a month in, I love walking. … I’ll speed it up eventually to running, but unfortunately I don’t want to run in sweaty to Much (and therefore grossing people out). Portable showers anyone?

One of my favourite new shows from fall is 2 Broke Girls. Other than the fact that it is extremely hilarious, this show is my life (or very nearly). Replace a diner with a retail store environment and cut out cupcake business with career in television, and that has been my life for the past few months.

Hit a little close to home this past episode, when Caroline has to give up her pony because she can’t afford to keep him warm during the winter months. While she figures her own shit out she gives the horse her coat and she gets her plastic on with a black garbage bag.

This January, I’m giving up my metro pass and walking 7K to and from work (and that’s 7K each way). It’s only an hour speed walk, and yeah I understand the hesitation, and the “WTF, are you kidding me?” But I’m actually happy and excited to do it. There are plenty of reasons to be stoked: I don’t mind bundling up and you know I can’t afford a gym pass otherwise (so spare me the objections). I also have always wanted to be that person who would run 10K to start their day (there are those people… somewhere). Well here I go. It just so happens that when I decide to do it, it’ll be cold.

This is my version of the garbage bag coat. What lengths have you guys gone to save for something (I want to know, actually)?

About A Boy

Note: I wrote this in mid-December. Still don’t care, but thought, “Why not post it?”

Over the past little while, you could probably catch me remarking how annoying or odd it made me feel whenever I would be mistaken for being a dude. Oh yeah, it’s happened. That goes with the territory with having short hair and not having the most uber-femme (or bind-y) wardrobe. And it is so weird, I feel so feminine with my shorter hair! Or at least, inside I feel pretty, girly. Sure, a little rough around the edges, but my cheeks give that all away anyways.

But after the fourth (and fifth) time of being mistaken for a boy, I wondered, why I am so wrapped up in worrying what I look like? What about being mistaken for a boy gets under my skin?

I don’t know still. But it did give me a lick of being misrepresented though even the most artificial of judgements (a look). So from now on, I just don’t give a fuck.

Video Diary No. 07 “Big Comfy Couch”

I’m laughing here because my room mate and I are discussing “slutting” it up again. Still. Always (never do) while I was trying to make a still for the post. Just kidding. We were discussing how much of a dump our place looked like in my last video.

10 second clean up time.

See Aimee Blog Video Diary No. 02

I’m finding that doing video diary style blog posts are actually a little more fun than writing it all out. So, hopefully I keep this up. But more frequently. And a little funnier or interesting. Whatever, you’re the one watching. I recorded this last Friday.

End of Days

How creepy is this screen shot? I look like Elijah Wood from Sin City.

I was too lazy to write, so I made a video instead. And if you were prompted to watch, here’s that video I mentioned. Warning: foreshadowing? and it’s 7 minutes long of Sheila and I chatting, enticing you to come to the launch of See Aimee Learn. So we traded secrets for people to come. However those videos are later, this one we made to chat about life. You were warned.

Kate

My friends and I are pretty big fans of Kate Lanphear, she exudes enigmatic energy through her style, her work, her image. But it is easy just to like the image and not really know what lies beneath, and Pat shared an article about her from Business of Fashion.

In particular I enjoyed her backstory, her grind:

But in those early years, making ends meet was a constant struggle. “I ended up living in a hostel, sharing a room with seven guys in bunk beds,” she said. “I was the only girl in the room. I would clean the disgusting hostel through the night. My roommates taught me how to hustle pool. You would drink beer for free and buy a loaf of bread and peanut butter and eat that for a whole week.” It was a rough and unglamorous period, though Lanphear doesn’t regret a minute of it. “I’m glad I did it. I don’t think I could go through it again. But it was an amazing time. I would go to work for a magazine during the day and then work through the night so they would let me live in the hostel.”

- Here

I really appreciate this.

NOW PLAYING: Young Man

Taken from Taylor Takes Pictures (http://taylortakespictures.blogspot.com/)

If you’re lucky like me, you get to work at a place that you get exposed to new music that you wouldn’t normally have the time to go out and explore on your own. Sometimes it is hit or miss, but when it’s a hit, I have no qualms with playing albums over and over again (I’m one of those). When I heard “Home Alone” by Young Man, I was hooked. Dudes, this guy Colin Caulfield creates some beautiful music. And this song in particular… ugh. I’ve been missing Vancouver a lot lately and this is not helping. Ah well. This time in my life is only fodder for the memoir I’ll give my kids.

Young Man‘s album Ideas of Distance dropped recently. Go read his Nylon feature here (and get some free music).

So, What’s Up?

I’ve had an incredible and depressing couple of weeks. Maybe three weeks, because I haven’t been updating. But I’m not going to do a usual flash-bang “what’s new with Aimee post” but instead, I’m going to talk about things that have been floating around my mind in the last little while.

I (1) went to Montreal with my friend Tahnee and her amazing family. I’ll tell you this much: I love families. I love being around them and I love filipino families the most. I’m biased, of course, because I am filipino, but I love them because they are always hospitable, will get angry if you don’t eat, will make sure you’re enjoying yourself, and there will be points of humour that is so rare with other families. I’m so glad they showed me a very good taste of Montreal (oh, I will be back) and gave me a brief reminder of family back home. Tahnee Pantig and family, you are a gem.

But, again, speaking of family, (2) my best brother Dino came to town for a week long visit! He left three days ago and I miss him a lot. I can say that. I know I’m lucky to have a brother who is pretty much my fraternal twin except he’s 6 years older. I wonder if that is possible that somehow I remained a zygote somewhere in my mom in 1982. That was gross. Enough thinking through my keystrokes.

I think Dino had a wonderful time, and I think he really enjoyed our Canadian adventure (probably more on that later).

The above coolness obviously has be balanced by equal lame-ness, as life is sometimes like that. I can’t really go into too much detail (3), especially since the things that are bringing me down are not even in set in stone, but let’s just say I might have an amazing opportunity soon but the only thing that stands in my way is money (don’t have enough). Which makes me want to rip out my hair, because money should be the last thing that stands in the way of anything related to your dreams. Vague enough for you?

Anyways, this upcoming week when I’m not working or working (yep) I’ll be online, doing stuff. See you there.

Welcome to the Gun Show

Showing off the ol’ pythons. Just another day hyping up the season(?) finale Death Valley, of which is on tonight.

I sincerely like this show. There are the laugh out loud moments, I can turn off my brain, and because I lack cable (or a useable television), I don’t have regular access to Family Guy, the show I would watch so I could let my brain melt a bit after a long day.

Then I read this. Caity Lotz plays Kirsten, the rookie on the UTF squad and a pretty funny character on the show. She basically revealed that the prospect of Season 2 is … umm… not so alive.

Ah well. Try to catch my appearance around the 8:30 mark! :)

Letters Better Than The Alphabet

I got a special surprise from the West Coast the last week, and honestly, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Elyse, I miss you and movie dates are never the same.

My Mom is Funny

This was the subject header of a body-less email I got from my mom today.

My mom is in Italy right now (she deserves it, she never does anything for herself) and she told me she’d keep in touch via my auntie’s iPad (or, IPAD) and I think that despite her using a computer for the majority of her career, even Steve Jobs couldn’t help her out.

And yes, I still use Hotmail.

DICTION FICTION

Being a vlogger about learning how to do stuff requires me to speak… relatively properly. I hate pronouncing shit incorrectly. It bothers me. And when I’m corrected, it is truly the worst thing ever. So, when I was thinking about Synecdoche, New York, the movie, I had to figure out how to pronounce synedoche, which then lead me to the best YouTube channel ever, Pronounciation Book.

First, they bring you in with logical (sure?) words, sounding out things like:

Then, they trick you:

The best (toss up):

And then you spend about 20 minutes of your day looking up ways that they’ve decided to pronounce things and you realize it is two accounts doing their best at what they do.

What happened to me?!

Manrepelled

So I went to Holts to get Patricia a birthday present, and also met with Leandra Medine of Manrepeller.

Needless to say, she loved my glasses.
